Ucrania y Rusia, Palestina e Israel, Sáhara, Marruecos y Argelia, también Siria, Libia, Yemen, Cachemira, Etiopía, Mozambique, Colombia, Nicaragua, Cuba y un largo y desalentador etcétera de inestabilidades en otros tantos países o regiones me han hecho volver a recuperar el blog. Al menos, mientras escribo, no discutiré con ningún vecino.

Estos días en los que estamos pendientes de la situación en Ucrania pensaba en que deberíamos leer más, escribir, escuchar música, hacer deporte… Ocupando el tiempo en eso no le haríamos daño a nadie. Precisamente esta semana, en una excursión por Tarragona https://www.tarragonaturisme.cat/ca con unos amigos del fútbol, al pararnos a observar la inmensidad del mar desde un acantilado, le comenté a uno de ellos que a algunas personas les iría muy bien sentarse allí a observar, escuchar y, sobre todo, reflexionar si realmente necesitan actuar con maldad. En tono jocoso, eso nos llevó a unos comentarios un tanto escépticos.

Y escéptico se consideraba a veces a sí mismo el matemático, escritor y filósofo británico Bertrand Russell, quien fue un destacado activista social pacifista. En una de sus frases célebres aseguraba: «La guerra no determina quién tiene la razón, solamente quién queda». Por eso mismo soy escéptico con los políticos en general. En Nicaragua, por ejemplo, quedan en el limbo miles de familias nicaragüenses que eran beneficiadas con la cooperación de organismos sin ánimo de lucro como, por ejemplo, la Fundación Fabretto https://es.fabretto.org. El régimen que dirige Daniel Ortega ha decidido cancelar la personalidad jurídica de 11 asociaciones no gubernamentales a las que acusa de lucrarse. No es una buena noticia, pero confío en que no habrá dictadores eternamente y sí buenas personas dispuestas a ayudar a los demás.

Quizá por el título, me ha apetecido mencionar esta canción de U2 https://www.u2.com. Posiblemente muy pocos la consideren una de sus mejores canciones, pero a mí me gusta. Su letra tremendamente pacifista y las múltiples acciones benéficas de la banda bien merecen esta entrada en el blog, y no será la única. Incluso el título del álbum, «All That You Can’t Leave Behind» («Todo aquello que no puedes dejar atrás») me hace pensar en los desplazados por las guerras y la tristeza que deben sentir al alejarse del lugar donde desean vivir en paz. El vídeo de Youtube que he elegido no es el oficial, creo que no llegaron a hacerlo, pero incluye la letra y eso ayudará a dos buenos amigos a seguir aprendiendo inglés ahora que el coronavirus les tiene confinados.

Decía el presentador Juanma Castaño en la editorial de su programa de radio del jueves: «aquí estamos en este desgraciadamente histórico 24 de febrero de 2022 en el que ha comenzado una guerra en Europa y en el que es el principal o el mayor ataque de un estado a otro en este continente desde el fin de la 2ª Guerra Mundial. Es un día por tanto donde casi nos da vergüenza hablar de deporte, pero el deporte también es vínculo muchas veces de protesta y de reivindicación y de exposición ante lo que está opinando todo el pueblo acerca de lo que ocurre justo en estos momentos en Ucrania con el bombardeo de las tropas rusas». Y minutos después tenía unas palabras pensando en esa gente que se está desplazando dejando todo atrás, como lo que me sugiere ese título del álbum de U2.

Veremos cómo avanzan los acontecimientos. No sé si es por la visibilidad de las redes sociales pero me da la sensación que existe, si cabe, algo más de reacción general contra cualquier guerra. Aun así, me preocupa que en estos casos una de las soluciones de un grupo de países sea enviar armamento a una de las partes. Esas armas solamente van a causar más daños personales a gente inocente mientras los que supuestamente deben protegernos lo ven desde sitios privilegiados sin ponerse de acuerdo o sin encerrar a los culpables de cada conflicto, que no deben ser más de diez personas en cada uno.

Ojalá esta cama voladora sirva para poner a salvo a toda esa gente, aunque sea con sus letras. Cama voladora, vuela un poco, por favor.

Peace on Earth

Ukraine and Russia, Palestine and Israel, Sahara, Morocco and Algeria, also Syria, Libya, Yemen, Kashmir, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Colombia, Nicaragua, Cuba and a long and discouraging list of instabilities in many other countries or regions took me back to my blog. At least as I write, I won’t be arguing with any neighbors.

Now that we are following the situation in Ukraine, I was thinking that we should read more, write, listen to music, play sports… By occupying our time with that, we would not harm anyone. These week, for example, I did a light hike near Tarragona https://www.tarragonaturisme.cat/ca with some football friends. When we stopped to observe the immensity of the sea from a cliff I told to one friend that some people would need to sit there to observe, listen and, above all, think if they really need to be that bad towards people. Jokingly, that led to somewhat skeptical comments.

And skeptical was sometimes considering himself the British mathematician, writer and philosopher Bertrand Russell, who was a prominent anti-war social activist. In one of his famous phrases he assured: «War does not determine who is right, only who is left.» That is why I am skeptical of politicians in general. Definitely not good news, anyway I am confident that there will be no dictators forever but there will always be good people willing to help others.

Perhaps because of the title, I felt like mentioning this song by U2 https://www.u2.com. I guess few people consider it one of their best songs, but I like it. Its tremendously pacifist lyrics and the many charitable actions by the band well deserve this blog post, and it won’t be the only one. Even the album title «All That You Can’t Leave Behind» makes me think of those displaced by wars and the sadness they must feel as they move away from where they want to live in peace. The Youtube video that I have chosen is not the official one, I think they did not make any, but it includes the lyrics so it may help two good friends of mine to continue learning English now that the coronavirus has confined them.

Presenter Juanma Castaño said in the introduction of his radio program on Thursday: «here we are in this unfortunately historic February 24, 2022 in which a war has begun in Europe and in which it is the main or the largest attack of a state to another on this continent since the end of World War 2. It is therefore a day where we are almost embarrassed to talk about sport, but sport is also often a link of protest and vindication and exposure about all the people is saying regarding what is happening right now in Ukraine with the shelling by Russian troops». And minutes later he talked about those people who are leaving everything behind, like what that title of the U2 album suggests me.

We will see how events progress. I don’t know if it’s because of the visibility of social networks, but I get the feeling that there is, if possible, some more reaction against any war. Even so, I am concerned that in these cases one of the solutions run by a group of countries is to send weapons to one of the parties. Those weapons are going to damage more innocent citizens while those who are supposed to protect us see it from a privileged position without agreeing or locking up those responsible of each conflict, which are probably not more than ten people on each one.

Hopefully this flying bed will serve to save all those people, even if it’s with these words. Flying bed, fly a little, please.

You’ll never walk alone

Como expliqué en la introducción, este blog es un espacio donde compartir buena música por el recuerdo de los momentos entre padres e hijos, ya fuera contando cuentos o viendo un bonito videoclip musical antes de ir a dormir. A veces, la actualidad sacude la biblioteca musical de mi cabeza y cambio el hilo argumental entre unas canciones y otras. Por desgracia, hay defunciones todos los días y algunas son de personajes públicos que a muchos nos son familiares.

El martes falleció Michael Robinson, ex futbolista, comentarista y presentador de televisión. Sin conocerlo, pero por mis sensaciones tras haberlo visto tantas horas en la televisión y viendo las reacciones de la gente que trató con él, parece haber sido de esas personas con las que es fácil llevarse bien. Además, me despierta admiración el hecho que destacara en una faceta, la de comunicador, que no era algo que inicialmente dominara como el balón y que lo hizo en un idioma que también tuvo que ir aprendiendo. Admiro eso y, sobre todo, la transmisión de los valores y enseñanzas que ahora comparten los que trabajaron con él: la fortaleza para defender sus principios, la necesidad de dar la talla y de afrontar con entereza lo que venga, el no hacer nada que obligase a su padre a mandarle a la cama sin cenar.

De las horas de fútbol con Michael Robinson http://@michaelrobinson ante la televisión me vienen a la cabeza dos canciones, pero por su condición de ex futbolista del Liverpool F.C. https://www.liverpoolfc.com/ me parece más justo hablar de otra: You’ll Never Walk Alone. Originalmente, fue compuesta para un musical de Broadway estrenado en 1945 que tuvo bastante éxito y la canción cierta repercusión. La versión que más conocemos fue la de 1963 de Gerry and the Pacemakers, una banda musical de Liverpool https://www.visitliverpool.com/ que también fue apadrinada por Brian Epstein y producida por George Martin, pues eran amigos de The Beatles. Ese mismo año la canción fue adoptada por los hinchas del Liverpool F.C. y rápidamente se convirtió en el himno del club siendo cantada por sus seguidores antes de cada partido con la versión de Gerry and the Pacemakers sonando en la megafonía del estadio.

De la cantidad de vídeos que hay con esa canción, he seleccionado uno que me hace pensar en la importancia de la psicología en el deporte. A los que nos gusta el deporte en general y el fútbol en particular, no nos importaría ampliar este vídeo de apenas 3 minutos con otros que nos expliquen todo lo que hay detrás para comprender cómo un equipo que va perdiendo 3-0 en la primera parte consigue ganar una final de la Copa de Europa remontando en 45 minutos tras el descanso. Cada vez que veo imágenes así pienso en la fortaleza mental de los deportistas profesionales para competir bajo presión, para no fallar ante miles (o millones) de personas, incluso para superarse a sí mismos. Le doy mucho valor a esos aspectos y a lo que se han esforzado para llegar hasta allí. Además, de esa colección de valores que les ha dado el deporte, cada vez más deportistas ponen en práctica la solidaridad. Como Michael Robinson, parece que son de los agradecidos a la vida, de los que -en lugar de amilanarse- disfrutan de escuchar a decenas de miles de personas cantando al unísono ese You’ll Never Walk Alone instantes antes de jugar un partido de fútbol en Anfield.

Mucha gente se siente sola. Pero también hay gente que, quizá sin conocer esa canción, intenta que no sientan que caminan solos. Cáritas Girona http://www.caritasgirona.cat/ tiene un proyecto en colaboración con cientos de estudiantes de centros educativos de la provincia para evitar la soledad de los ancianos de residencias y fomentar su autoestima. Ahora que no los pueden visitar, les han estado enviando mensajes de apoyo y ánimo a través de las nuevas tecnologías. Algo parecido viene haciendo Amics de la Gent Gran https://amigosdelosmayores.org/es. En Lleida, la asociación Reintegra http://reintegralleida.org/ sigue ayudando a personas en situación de vulnerabilidad ofreciéndoles estrategias y herramientas para mejorar su situación laboral, actuando ahora como intermediarios gestionando ofertas laborales y conectando a las personas más necesitadas con empresas del territorio. Y en Tarragona la colaboración de la Cruz Roja http://www.creuroja.org/AP/cm/25P24L1/Tarragona.aspx con el Ayuntamiento ha servido para que cinco personas que estaban durmiendo en el pabellón municipal del Serrallo consigan trabajar en labores agrícolas, apoyándoles en lo necesario hasta que obtengan el primer salario.

Me gustaría imaginarme que alguna de esas personas que ha recibido esa ayuda, también haya podido escuchar el tema You’ll Never Walk Alone de Gerry and the Pacemakers. El 20 de marzo de 2020, a iniciativa de la emisora de radio holandesa 3FM, fue emitido simultáneamente por 162 emisoras de radio de toda Europa en señal de solidaridad y resistencia frente a la pandemia de Coronavirus. Mientras la ayuda va en camino, les dará energía eso de “walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone, you’ll never walk alone”.

You’ll never walk alone

As I explained in the introduction, this blog is a space where I share good music for the memory of moments between parents and children, whether it be telling stories or watching a nice music video clip before going to sleep. Sometimes the news shake the music library in my head and I change the story line between the songs. Unfortunately, there are deaths every day and some are famous people that many of us are familiar with.

Last Tuesday, Michael Robinson -a former soccer player, commentator and television presenter-, passed away. I did not know him but after having seen him for so many hours on television and considering the reactions of the people who dealt with him, he seems to have been one of those persons with whom it is easy to get along. In addition, I am amazed at the fact that he stood out as communicator, something that he was not supposed to be good at and that he did it in a language he also had to learn. I admire that and, above all, the transmission of the values and teachings that those who worked with him are sharing now with us: the spirit to defend his principles, the need of being good enough and face with integrity what comes, not to do something that would have made his father to send him to bed without having dinner.

There are a lot of videos with that song but I have selected one that makes me think about the importance of psychology in sports. For those of us who like sports in general and soccer in particular, we would not mind expanding this video of just 3 minutes with others explaining everything behind it to understand how a team that is losing 3-0 in the first half manages to win a Champions League final after the half time. Every time I see images like this I think about the mental strength of professional athletes to compete under pressure, not to fail before thousands (or millions) of people, even to outdo themselves. I place great value on those aspects and what they have strived to get there. In addition to that collection of values that sport has given them, more and more athletes put solidarity into practice. Like Michael Robinson, it looks like they are grateful to life and -instead of being intimidated- they enjoy listening to tens of thousands of people singing You’ll Never Walk Alone when they are going to play a football game at Anfield.

Many people feel lonely. But there is also people who, perhaps without knowing that song, try to help them not to feel that they are walking alone. Cáritas Girona http://www.caritasgirona.cat/ has a project in collaboration with hundreds of students from educational centers of the province trying to avoid the loneliness of the elderly in residences and promote their self-esteem. Now that they cannot visit them, they have been sending messages of support and encouragement through new technologies. Something similar has been done by Amics de la Gent Gran https://amigosdelosmayores.org/es. In Lleida, Reintegra Association http://reintegralleida.org/ continues to help people in vulnerable situations by offering them strategies and tools to improve their employment situation, now acting as intermediaries managing job offers and connecting the most needy people with companies in the area. Also in Tarragona, the collaboration of the Red Cross http://www.creuroja.org/AP/cm/25P24L1/Tarragona.aspx with the City Council has enabled five people who were sleeping in the Serrallo municipal pavilion to get to work agricultural, supporting them as necessary until they get the first salary.

I would like to imagine that some of those people who have received this help have also been able to listen to the song You’ll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers. On March 20, 2020, at the initiative of the Dutch radio station 3FM, it was broadcast simultaneously by 162 radio stations across Europe as a sign of solidarity and resistance to the Coronavirus pandemic. Estos días mis amigos de Tarragona (y la mexicana de Hong Kong) me han ido enviando cositas para añadir en el blog. En otras entradas he hablado de ONG de nivel mundial y ayer de un par de Hawai. Hoy toca mencionar a Taula Amiga, que a través del comedor social que la Fundació Formació i Treball https://www.formacioitreball.org/es/comedor-taula-amiga/ tiene en el centro de Tarragona sirve diariamente 200 almuerzos a familias y personas necesitadas, un 50% más que antes de la emergencia sanitaria. Necesitan recibir más alimentos y poder atender así una demanda que va en aumento. El Mercat Central de Tarragona ya ha iniciado una campaña de recogida de productos de primera necesidad para facilitar ayudarles.

También Cáritas Tarragona https://www.caritasdtarragona.cat/ está haciendo un llamamiento de voluntarios para ayudar en comedores sociales, servicios de ayuda a domicilios, centros de distribución de alimentos y apoyo telefónico a personas necesitadas. La entidad necesita cubrir la creciente demanda que está registrando estos días. Los voluntarios interesados (deben ser mayores de edad) pueden dirigirse a caritas@caritasdtarragona.cat.

El protagonista de hoy https://jackjohnsonmusic.com/home ha tenido éxito tanto en la música como en el surf y la combinación de ambos en sus vídeos musicales transmite buenas vibraciones. Quizá por ser Hawaiano o por un fuerte accidente que sufrió practicando surf, parece tomarse las cosas con calma y nos entretiene con un pop ligero y refrescante.

El videoclip de hoy es una buena muestra de ese carácter. Los que tenéis hijos aprovechad para verlo con ellos, creo que les gustará. El simpático mono que veréis en el videoclip es de una película y serie de libros y de animación llamada “Jorge El Curioso” (Curious George). Espero que disfrutéis también con su música. Para mí ha sido un buen descubrimiento.

Si no tenemos la suerte de disfrutar de los beneficios de la combinación de surf y música, héroes anónimos como los trabajadores de Dipsalut, el organismo de salud pública de la Diputación de Girona, han elaborado un catálogo de propuestas pedagógicas https://www.dipsalut.cat/noticia.html?id=880 para desarrollar la salud emocional de los niños y adolescentes. Mediante vídeos, juegos, canciones, cuentos o manualidades los pequeños y jóvenes aprenden a gestionar el miedo, la frustración, el estrés o la tensión y a desarrollar competencias como la autoestima, la empatía o el trabajo en equipo en familia.

Por otro lado, la Fundació Catalana de l’Esplai https://fundacionesplai.org/ ha preparado para esta etapa de confinamiento un “escape room” virtual a través de un juego de una hora de duración donde la protagonista es una mariposa viajera que requiere nuestra ayuda para encontrar el verano perdido. A ver si esa imaginación infantil nos permite viajar a Hawai.

Según cuentan revisando sus iniciales, el álbum Pet Sounds de The Beach Boys del que hablé ayer era en parte un homenaje a Phil Spector https://philspector.com/, un conocido productor musical que ideó una técnica de orquestación llamada el muro de sonido, que consistía en crear un sonido denso y reverberado haciendo tocar a varios músicos al unísono para alcanzar proporciones similares a las de una orquesta.

La canción que quizá fue más representativa del muro de sonido fue “Be My Baby” de The Ronettes, aunque la mayoría de las lectoras del blog la relacionarán a la película “Dirty Dancing” y Patrick Swayze. Si el señor Swayze hubiera ido a nuestro colegio, posiblemente le hubiéramos llamado Patrick “el melenas”, el terror de las nenas…

Y habiendo dicho la tontería del día ya me puedo despedir, que con el primer personaje de la entrada de hoy es mejor no entretenerme. Digamos que no ha tenido ideas tan brillantes en los últimos años.

Pet Sounds album initials was kind of The Beach Boys’ tribute to Phil Spector https://philspector.com/, a well-known music producer who conceived an orchestration technique called the wall of sound, which consisted of creating a dense and reverberating sound making several musicians play in unison to reach proportions similar to those of an orchestra.

The most representative song of the wall of sound probably was «Be My Baby» by The Ronettes. Some of the female readers of the blog will relate it to the movie «Dirty Dancing» and Patrick Swayze. If Mr. Swayze had gone to my school, we would have called him Patrick «the ponytail», the terror of the females…

Having said the stupid thing of the day I can say goodbye. It is better not to talk too much about the first character of today’s post, let’s say he haven’t had such brilliant ideas in recent years.

(Sólo Dios Sabe)… lo que habría pasado si hubiera tomado esta decisión o esta otra, si hubiera hecho aquello, si hubiera dicho lo que pensaba, si hubiese estudiado esta otra carrera o aceptado ese otro trabajo… y también el porqué de muchas cosas de las que suceden a nuestro alrededor. No nos podíamos ir de California https://www.visitcalifornia.com/ sin mencionar a la banda más representativa de allí y, posiblemente, de los Estados Unidos. Si hablé de la incidencia de David Bowie en muchos artistas que vinieron después, la lista de grupos musicales que se dejaron influenciar en algún momento u otro por The Beach Boys https://www.thebeachboys.com/ es interminable y de mucho nivel: The Beatles (acción recíproca), Pink Floyd, The Who, Elton John, ABBA, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., Radiohead… Liderados por Brian Wilson para componer y producir, The Beach Boys introdujeron técnicas de grabación innovadoras que sumaron a los ascendentes que ya llevaban de serie por sus afinidades a grupos vocales de décadas anteriores.

Para saber más sobre The Beach Boys en general y Brian Wilson en particular, podemos ver la película autobiográfica “Love and Mercy”. Es relativamente reciente y tiene buena pinta, otra para la lista de cosas pendientes. Aquí os dejo un avance.

De la canción de hoy -“God Only Knows”- os dejo un videoclip con imágenes de la serie “Aquellos Maravillosos Años”. Ya habíamos hablado de esa serie en una entrada anterior. Los otros videoclips que he encontrado eran en directo y no se aprecia tan bien la canción, donde se reconoce el “muro de sonido” creado por Phil Spector. Me parece especialmente sensacional a partir del minuto 2:00 hasta el final. Los críticos musicales la sitúan entre una de las mejores canciones de la historia de la música popular y el álbum que la incluye -“Pet Sounds”- de los más influyentes y quizá el mejor y más aclamado de la historia.

If I mentioned David Bowie’s influence on many artists who came after, the list of music groups that were influenced by The Beach Boys https://www.thebeachboys.com/ is endless and high-level: The Beatles (reciprocal influence), Pink Floyd, The Who, Elton John, ABBA, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., Radiohead … Led by Brian Wilson to compose and produce, The Beach Boys introduced innovative recording techniques that added to the influences that they already had due to their affinities to vocal groups from previous decades.

If you want to know more about The Beach Boys and specially about Brian Wilson, you may watch the autobiographical film «Love and Mercy». It is relatively recent and looks good, another thing for the to-do list. Here you have a trailer.

I am adding here a music video about today’s song -«God Only Knows»- with images from the series «The Wonder Years». We already talked about that series in a previous post. The other music videos that I found were live and we would not appreciate the song in the same way, for example we can even recognize the “wall of sound” created by Phil Spector. I really like this song, especially from the 2:00 minute until the end. Music critics rank it among one of the best songs in the history of popular music and the album -“Pet Sounds”- is considered one of the most influential and perhaps the best and most acclaimed in history.

Common People – Gent Normal

El ukelele de Israel Kamakawiwo’ole me hizo pensar en el grupo Manel http://www.manelweb.com/, tienen unas cuantas canciones que son como himnos para mí por eso que os decía que cada uno hace suyas las canciones según la interpretación de la letra y el momento que está viviendo. Además de parecerme muy buenos músicos, muchas de sus letras son como poemas.

No de todas esas canciones tienen video oficial pero algunas iré poniendo. Este videoclip que os añado hoy sí es oficial y me parece muy original, pues está al gran nivel de la adaptación que hacen de la letra de la canción que versionan y de cómo demuestran lo buenos músicos que son. Seguramente en unos años tendremos unas cuantas versiones del “Common People” de Pulp, pero pocas estarán tan logradas como la del grupo Manel. Aún me pone los pelos de punta cuando cambia la intensidad de la canción con “i m’agafava del bracet”.

Manel – La Gent Normal (Pulp)

Hoy no tenía muchas batallitas que contar. Para historia la que cuenta Jarvis Cocker en esta canción que aún dará de qué hablar pues, al parecer, la compañera de estudios griega podría ser de la “alta sociedad”. Lo realmente importante es que es una muy buena canción, y no solamente lo digo yo sino los oyentes de la BBC y los lectores de la revista Rolling Stone que la votaron como la mejor canción del Britpop. Si bien Oasis y Blur nos suenen más como grupos representativos del Britpop, esta canción es un gol por toda la escuadra y, además, de los que te dan un título.

El videoclip también es muy original, aunque reduce a un tiempo de 4:15 una gran canción de 5:52. Por otro lado, tengo la duda de si ha pasado algún tipo de censura. No recordaba que el videoclip fuera más corto, que podría ser, y aún menos que justo en el minuto 2:32 se omita la palabra “screw” -que se traduciría como algo más que “atornillar”-. A partir del 3:26 la canción original sigue su curso y en el videoclip ya se va introduciendo la parte final de la canción. Si os gusta mucho, disfrutad de la versión entera e incluso de alguna en directo pues es espectacular ver saltar a miles de personas al mismo tiempo.

Atornillar o desatornillar, esa es la cuestión. No tenía batallitas para hoy y resulta que al darme cuenta que en el videoclip se había censurado la palabra “screw”, he recordado que cuando era pequeño mi padre me regaló una cerradura con su correspondiente llave para que practicara eso de abrir hacia la izquierda y cerrar hacia la derecha. Al parecer no le era de mucha ayuda para atornillar y desatornillar cuando había que arreglar algo en casa. Él era un manitas pero decía que le faltaba fuerza en las manos. Aunque obviamente tiene su parte triste, me alegra recordarle cada vez que le echo de menos mientras me peleo con cualquier cosa que no consigo arreglar fácilmente.

Por cierto, creo que os dije que contaba unos cuentos muy originales sobre una cama voladora. No os cuento uno pero os recuerdo dos canciones excelentes sobre mis pequeños héroes, la gente normal. Buenas noches.

Pulp – Common People

The ukulele of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole made me think about the catalan music band Manel http://www.manelweb.com/, they have some songs that are like hymns for me, as I said, according to the interpretation of the lyrics and the moment you are living. In addition to sounding very good musicians to me, many of their lyrics are like poems.

There is not an official video of all those songs but I will be posting some sooner or later. This video clip that I am adding today is official and I never get tired of watching it, since it is at the great level of how they adapt the lyrics and how they demonstrate how good musicians they are. In the coming years we will probably have a more and more versions of Pulp’s «Common People», but few will be as successful as the one of Manel band. I still get goosebumps when the intensity of the song changes with “i m’agafava del bracet”.

Today I did not have stories to tell. As a story, the one that Jarvis Cocker tells in this song will give people something to talk about because, apparently, the Greek fellow student could be of the «high society». The really important thing is that it is a very good song, and I am not the only one saying it but the listeners of the BBC and the readers of Rolling Stone magazine who voted it as the best Britpop song. Although Oasis and Blur sound more like representative groups of Britpop, this song is like a goal putting the ball on the top corner and getting a title.

Apparently, I was not very helpful to screw and unscrew when something had to be fixed at home. He was a handyman, quite good fixing everything, but he said he lacked strength in his hands. I get sad when I think about him but I am happy to remember about him every time I am fighting with whatever I cannot easily fix.

De la misma manera que “Cuéntame” podría ser el equivalente español a “The Wonder Years”, a veces pienso que Miguel Bosé se llegó a inspirar en David Bowie https://www.davidbowie.com/home. Lo digo por el aspecto de ambos en diferentes etapas, no por la música. En eso, era único e inigualable como otros grandes artistas. Me apunto como tarea pendiente ver algún documental sobre él, es un personaje interesante.

No ha sido “Cuéntame” ni Miguel Bosé quienes me han traído hoy hasta David Bowie y Starman. Fue el hecho de mencionar ayer a Ringo Starr, considerado uno de los 100 mejores baterías de la historia por la revista Rolling Stone. Podía haber mencionado a cualquier otro de los 99 restantes, pero he querido encontrar en esa lista a Michael “Woody” Woodmansey https://web.archive.org/web/20160131030918/http://www.woodywoodmansey.co.uk/, el que fuera batería de Bowie en el álbum “The Rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” y en otros álbumes. Siempre que escucho la canción “The Man Who Sold the World” pienso que hace un gran trabajo, aunque lo digo desde la simple opinión de alguien que disfruta escuchando buena música y poco más.

Según cuentan, la canción -una de las más conocidas de Bowie- narra como un extraterrestre contacta con los jóvenes a través de la radio para lanzarles un mensaje de esperanza. Esto me recuerda lo que muchas veces pienso, que cada uno hacemos nuestras las canciones en función de la interpretación de la letra y del momento que estemos viviendo. Seguramente, siendo una de las canciones y de los álbumes más destacados e Influyentes de la historia del rock, haya otro tipo de interpretaciones.

Starman

The same way that “Cuéntame” could be the Spanish equivalent of “The Wonder Years”, sometimes I think that Spanish singer Miguel Bosé inspired in David Bowie https://www.davidbowie.com/home. I think so because of the appearance of both in different stages, not because of the music. Regarding music, Bowie was unique and peerless as other great artists. Watching a documentary about him is one of my pending tasks, he is an interesting character.

It was not “Cuéntame” or Miguel Bosé who brought me to David Bowie and Starman today. It was the fact of mentioning Ringo Starr yesterday, included by Rolling Stone magazine on the list of the 100 greatest drummers in history. I could have mentioned any of the remaining 99, but I wanted to find on that list Michael “Woody” Woodmansey https://web.archive.org/web/20160131030918/http://www.woodywoodmansey.co.uk/, the drummer for Bowie on the album “The Rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” and some other albums. Every time I listen to the song «The Man Who Sold the World» I think he did a great job, although I say it just with the view of someone who enjoys listening to good music.

The song – one of Bowie’s best known – narrates how an alien contacts the young people sending them a message of hope on the radio. This reminds me of what I often think, each one of us take the songs for our lives according to the interpretation of the lyrics and the moment we are living. Surely, being one of the most outstanding and influential songs and albums in rock history, there are other interpretations.

Aquellos maravillosos años, de eso hablaba ayer y así se llamaba una serie (The Wonder Years) que nos tuvo enganchados a la televisión durante un tiempo. En la actualidad, la serie Cuéntame viene a ser algo parecido. Qué casualidad, ayer hablaba de la Alcántara Foundation Family https://alcantarafoundation.com/ y hoy menciono a otra familia Alcántara.

La serie recordaba parte de la historia de los EEUU de finales de la década de los 60 y principios de los 70 a través del personaje principal que, a su vez, hacia su recorrido por otros conflictos sociales, familiares e incluso amorosos. Esos acontecimientos eran narrados por el mismo personaje en su versión adulta, quien había sacado sus propias conclusiones después de unos años. Aunque hoy en día hay muchas opciones de series y películas, si no la visteis en su momento y la podéis recuperar, os recomiendo que le deis una oportunidad.

La banda sonora de “Aquellos Maravillosos Años“ era excepcional, no podía ser de otra manera con la cantidad de destacados grupos musicales que había en esa época. La canción que nos ocupa hoy era original de The Beatles y de las pocas que cantaba Ringo Starr, pero tan sólo un año después Joe Cocker http://www.cocker.com/, aún con más pelo que barba, hizo esta versión memorable y la usaron para la apertura de la serie.

La letra de la canción puede resultar muy inspiradora si tenemos algún momento débil y si no profundizamos demasiado en ella, pues en una frase habla de algo a lo que ni los amigos ni nadie debería ayudar. Los más pícaros, también pueden encontrar otro verso que incluye una broma más ocurrente.

En fin, que entre canción y canción más de uno hacía los “viajes” sin necesidad de subir a la cama y decir las palabras mágicas. Yo a lo mío… cama voladora, vuela un poco, por favor.

With a Little Help from My Friends

The Wonder Years, that’s what I was talking about yesterday and that was the name of a television series that had us hooked on to the television for a while. A Spanish tv series called ”Cuéntame” is something similar. What a coincidence, I was talking yesterday about the Alcántara Foundation Family https://alcantarafoundation.com/en/home/ and today I mention another Alcántara family (the one in “Cuéntame”).

This comedy-drama recalled part of the United States’ history of the late 1960s and early 1970s through the main character who also made his way through other social, family and even love conflicts. Those events were narrated by the same character in his adult version, who had drawn his own conclusions after a few years. Although there are many options for watching series and movies nowadays, if you did not know about that one I suggest you give it a chance and try to get it.

The soundtrack of “The Wonder Years” was exceptional, it could not be otherwise with the number of outstanding musical groups that were at that time. The show’s theme song is the one I will talk about today. The original “With a Little Help Form My Fiends” song was from The Beatles and was one of the few that Ringo Starr sang, but just a year later Joe Cocker http://www.cocker.com/, with more hair than beard, made this memorable version.

The lyrics of the song can be very inspiring if we have a weak moment and if we do not try to understand some of the sentences. In one of them they mention something that neither friends nor anyone should help on getting. The roguish ones may also find another verse that includes a wittier joke.

It looks like some musicians were doing kind of «trips» between songs without having to go to bed and say the magic words. I do my thing … flying bed, fly a little, please.\
