Fix you

Decía José Rojo Pacheta en una entrevista con Álvaro Benito que la soledad es muy mala, que te va matando poco a poco. Quizá por eso agradezco tanto que la música me haga compañía.

Estos días he conocido con más profundidad a una familia que ha tenido el generoso detalle que esa soledad no me haga daño. Kiko podría ser el Phil Collins del grupo Genesis, marca el ritmo con la batería y sería perfectamente el líder vocal del grupo, Sonia pondría la dulzura y el papel siempre relevante de un piano, Dani la discreción y tranquilidad de un bajista -aunque no tenga nada de bajo- y Emma lo mismo podría tocar la armónica, una pandereta, encantar con una flauta y hacer los coros incluso en latín.

En varios trayectos en coche con ellos sonaba Coldplay. Les explicaba que en unos años -incluso ahora mismo- podríamos hacer, como también con Queen y U2, un listado de canciones de Coldplay que millones de personas conocen: Yellow, Trouble, The Scientist, Clocks, Fix You, Viva la Vida, Paradise, A Sky Full of Stars… En el verano de sus conciertos llenos de pulseras de luz y color, es justo recordar que cumplen 25 años juntos bajo el nombre de Coldplay y que el tema que nos ocupa hoy está alcanzando la mayoría de edad.

Era el año 2005 cuando conseguí invitar a Levan Kenia a unas pruebas con el equipo cadete del F. C. Barcelona y en el coche me pedía continuamente la canción de la película Gladiator, y yo, de vez en cuando, colaba el Fix You de Coldplay con el que me emocionaba viendo el videoclip en mis ratos de soledad en Georgia. Debo reconocer que la primera vez que la escuché me resultó extraño su inicio con el falsete de Chris Martin pero, cuantas más veces la repetía, iba atendiendo a su variada instrumentación con órgano, piano, guitarra acústica y guitarra eléctrica, batería y un estribillo cantado por toda la banda. Quienes disfruten la canción tanto como yo, se habrán sorprendido alguna vez a sí mismos tocando la batería en el aire intentando imitar a Will Champion en el minuto 3:07 del vídeo, algo que se conoce como “air drumming” y que me encanta hacer delante de mi hermano porque le irrita un poco al mismo tiempo que le arranco una sonrisa. Os dejo el enlace al videoclip oficial al final de mi escrito.

El videoclip recorre calles de Londres con una iluminación y detalles de colores que evocan a la portada del álbum X&Y, mientras Chris Martin avanza hacia el estadio para interpretar, junto al resto de la banda, el final de la canción. Al llegar al escenario hace girar un foco que me recuerda la bombilla que instaló mi padre en nuestro trastero. El clímax de la guitarra eléctrica con la batería haciendo bailar a una multitud de gente y la sincronización con los fuegos artificiales aún me ponen la piel de gallina.

La letra de la canción es un mensaje de apoyo a quienes estén tristes por algún motivo. Cuando estoy lejos me imagino regresando a casa al escuchar “Lights will guide you home, And ignite your bones, And I will try to fix you” o recuerdo a mi padre en “Tears stream down your face, I promise you I will learn from my mistakes” porque un padre siempre quiere que su hijo aprenda de los errores.

Por muchos nuevos errores que pueda cometer, Papá. Y a seguir volando contigo.

Fix You

«Loneliness is so bad, it kills you little by little», said José Rojo Pacheta in an interview with Alvaro Benito. Maybe that’s why I appreciate so much that music is always with me.

These days I have gotten to know in greater depth a family that has been so kind to ensure that loneliness dos not harm me. Kiko could be Phil Collins of Genesis band, he sets the rhythm with the drums and could perfectly be the vocal leader of the group, Sonia would put the sweetness and relevant role of a piano, Dani the discretion and calm of a bassist and Emma could play the harmonica, a tambourine, enchant playing a flute and do the choruses even in Latin.

During few trips together in their car Coldplay sounded on the radio. I explained to them that in a few years time -even right now- we could make a list of Coldplay exits that millions of people know: Yellow, Trouble, The Scientist, Clocks, Fix You, Viva la Vida, Paradise, A Sky Full of Stars….. same as we did with Queen and U2. Now that their concerts are full of lighted bracelets, it is fair to remember that they celebrate 25 years together under Coldplay name and that «Fix You» just turned eighteen.

Back in 2005 I managed to invite Levan Kenia to some tests with the FC Barcelona U16 team. He was always asking me for the song from the movie Gladiator and I was sometimes choosing «Fix You» with which I was moved when watching the music video in my Georgian loneliness. I must admit that the first time I listened to it, its beginning with Chris Martin’s falsetto seemed strange to me but the more times I played it, the more I kept paying attention to its varied instrumentation with organ, piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums and a chorus with the whole band.

Those who enjoy the song as much as I do, would have surprised themselves at some point playing the drums in the air trying to pretend they are Will Champion at minute 3:07 of the video, something known as «air drumming» and that I love to do in front of my brother because it irritates him a bit at the same time that I make him smile.

The music video is set in London streets with lighting and color details that evoke the cover of the X&Y album, while Chris Martin runs to the stadium to perform the end of the song together with the rest of the band. Arriving on stage he spins a light bulb that reminds me of the light bulb my father installed in the storage room at my home. The electric guitar climax with drums and fireworks still gives me goosebumps.

The lyrics of the song are an encouraging message to those who are suffering. When I’m away I imagine myself going back home when listening «Lights will guide you home, And ignite your bones, And I will try to fix you» or I remember my father when they sing «Tears stream down your face, I promise you I will learn from my mistakes» as a father always wants his son to learn from mistakes.

For many new mistakes to come, Dad. And keeping flying with you.

Recuerdo estar en la cama de la habitación de un hotel de Londres. Era verano y debía estar en mis últimos años de educación primaria. Mi hermano se estaba duchando y yo curioseaba por los canales de televisión de otro país. Y de repente me detuve. No sé si fue por culpa de la belleza de Sigourney Weaver o por una melodía relativamente simple que hizo que recordara para siempre el título de la película ”El año que vivimos peligrosamente”.

Adaptada de una novela del mismo nombre y dirigida por Peter Weir, la película fue estrenada en 1982. Es un emocionante drama romántico que tiene lugar en Indonesia entre una funcionaria de la embajada británica (Sigourney Weaver) y un periodista australiano (Mel Gibson) que llega a Yakarta para cubrir las tensiones que vive el país durante el derrocamiento del presidente Sukarno. Digamos que ejerce como Celestina un fotógrafo que acompaña al periodista introduciéndole en la cultura local, y cuyo papel supuso el Óscar a la mejor actriz de reparto para Linda Hunt.

En Londres habéis puesto el foco de atención esta última semana a causa del fallecimiento de la Reina de Inglaterra, en Londres escuché por primera vez esa canción y, sí, en Londres se llevó a cabo la grabación de “Opera Sauvage”, el décimo álbum del músico griego Vangelis. Fue compuesto como banda sonora de un documental de naturaleza, siendo “L’Enfant” uno de los temas más utilizados como sintonía de otros programas y también se convirtió en el tema principal de la película, pese a que la banda sonora en general le correspondió a Maurice Jarre. Cuentan que le pidieron a Vangelis incluir “L’Enfant” en la película ”Carros de Fuego” como apertura de la primera escena en la playa, pero él propuso componer una nueva obra y el resultado fue el conocido tema central de ”Chariots of Fire” que ayudó decisivamente a conseguir un Óscar a la mejor banda sonora original.

Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassiou, conocido como Vangelis, era un compositor griego considerado como uno de los pioneros de la música electrónica y que solía musicalizar las películas improvisando con sus teclados y sintetizadores mientras visualizaba los montajes provisionales de los directores. De Vangelis podemos destacar las bandas sonoras de ”Carros de Fuego”, ”Blade Runner” y ”1492: La conquista del paraíso”.

Un paraíso podría ser ciertamente algún rincón de Indonesia, país donde se ambientaba la película de la que os hablaba, aunque fue rodada en gran parte en Filipinas. Para mi sorpresa, tras estos días en los que hemos oído hablar de la Commonwealth y del Imperio británico, leo que Indonesia fue colonizada por el Imperio neerlandés. I still can see myself laying in bed in a London hotel. It was summer, I guess it was in my last years of primary education. My brother was taking a shower and I was browsing the TV channels of the country. And I suddenly stopped. I don’t know if it was because of Sigourney Weaver’s beauty or due to a relatively simple melody that made me remember forever the title of that movie «The Year of Living Dangerously.»

Adapted from a novel with the same name and directed by Peter Weir, the film was released in 1982. The story is about a love affair set in Indonesia during the overthrow of President Sukarno, starring Sigourney Weaver as a British Embassy officer and Mel Gibson as an Australian journalist. It laso stars Linda Hunt as a photographer who accompanies the journalist by introducing him to the local culture and to the beautiful officer too, a role for which Hunt won the 1983 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In London you have put the spotlight this last week because of the death of the Queen of England, in London I heard that song for the first time and, yes, it took place in London the recording of «Opera Sauvage», the tenth album of Greek musician Vangelis. It was composed as the soundtrack of a nature documentary, being «L’Enfant» one of the most used themes as a tune to other programs and also became the main theme of the film, although the the rest of the soundtrack corresponded to Maurice Jarre. They say that Vangelis was asked to include «L’Enfant» in the film «Chariots of Fire» as the opening of the first scene on the beach. He then proposed to compose the iconic «Chariots of Fire» theme that decisively helped to get an Oscar for the best original soundtrack for this other film.

Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassiou, known as Vangelis, was a Greek composer considered one of the pioneers of electronic music and who used to musicalize the films by improvising with his keyboards and synthesizers while visualizing the provisional montages of the directors. From Vangelis we can highlight the soundtracks of «Chariots of Fire», «Blade Runner» and «1492: The Conquest of Paradise».

You could certainly find paradise in Indonesia, the country where the film I was talking about was set although it was shot largely in the Philippines. After some days in which we have heard about the Commonwealth and the British Empire, I just learned that Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch Empire and not by the British.
